Pond systems guide

How to use a
koi filter.

Understand filtration, pumps, aeration and water testing for a clean, balanced koi pond.

Filtration is fundamental to a healthy koi pond.

One of the most important parts of raising koi is maintaining proper filtration. Koi are more sensitive to water quality than many other fish, so their pond equipment deserves careful attention.

What a pond filter does

A pond filter helps control the biological balance of the pond system. Its job is to remove the waste products that koi produce. In the wild, fish waste is diluted by a large volume of water and carried away by moving currents. In an enclosed pond, that natural function needs to be provided for them.

Most pond filters use both mechanical and biological filtration. Mechanical filtration removes particles from the water: gravity and water flow carry solid waste into the filter, where it becomes trapped and can be cleaned out during regular maintenance.

Biological filtration relies on beneficial bacteria to break down toxic waste, including ammonia, into less harmful substances such as nitrates. Nitrates can also become harmful in large amounts, so it is important to monitor your water and keep levels within a healthy range.

Why a pump matters

A good pond filter cannot work properly without a pump to force water through it. In a pond-sized area, the filter cannot circulate water by itself. The pump moves water through the filter and around the pond, keeping the system active.

Aeration and water movement

Alongside a pump and filter, consider a small fountain, waterfall or other water feature. Koi need a consistent supply of oxygen. Moving water helps oxygen from the air mix into the pond, a process known as aeration.

Test water weekly

Test the chemical makeup of pond water every week. You can take a sample to a local pet store or use a home testing kit. Regular testing makes it easier to keep water chemistry in the normal, healthy range for koi.

A beautiful koi garden is not completely maintenance-free, but the regular care is manageable — and it is one of the most rewarding hobbies you can have.
